The East Kilbride Alliance was formed in Jan 2007 by a number of like-minded individuals from different areas of East Kilbride who felt that the town was becoming a less pleasant place to live due to the policies of South Lanarkshire Council who seemed to be a law unto themselves regardless of public opinion.
For example: Planning permission being given which threatened the ideals behind the original ethos of East Kilbride - which was a clear distinction between areas for housing and industry; Green areas which had been originally incorporated into community layouts being sold off to the highest bidders - to build private houses outwith the price range of many, while housing waiting lists grow ever longer; Destroying buildings of historic interest; Planning to extend the town centre while our existing town centre is full of empty units, with permission given for a superstore on Kittoch Field, one of the last remaining open spaces in the town centre.
While we do not like to think of ourselves as a political party, it was necessary for us to become one with the hope that in time we could get elected representatives on to the council to get our voices, and that of like-minded residents heard. Our main aim is to try and stop further decline of the town. We try to highlight issues which local people feel strongly about but do not seem to get their voices heard elsewhere.
